Triumvirate Environmental has been actively engaged on the issue of PCBs in building caulk for the past 5 years with policy/strategy development, testing programs, project/remediation management, as well as developing innovative, cost-saving remedial approaches for PCB removal. Triumvirate provided the field testing and remediation services at several of the most significant projects in the Northeast. This issue has garnered increasing attention from the general public, regulated community and media outlets that has resulted in EPA releasing new guidance documents directed at mitigating the potential risks posed by PCBs in building caulk. While there remains research to be completed on the associated risks, the regulated community is left to navigate this very complex and significant environmental heath issue.
On October 15th, 2009 Triumvirate Environmental held their first roundtable regarding the emerging environmental health concerns of PCB building caulk. Sean Reagan, Triumvirate’s Corporate Director of Higher Education, and Ross Hartman, Triumvirate’s Corporate Director of Field/Engineering Services led this roundtable to provide the most recent information on EPA’s new guidance and create a better awareness of this issue. Jeff Hamel, a Sr. VP at Woodard & Curran gave updates on the latest EPA developments, and William VanSchalkwyk, MIT’s EH&S Director reviewed MIT’s Westgate PCB remediation project. In attendance at this event was numerous EH&S and Facilities management personnel, representatives from Boards of Health and Education and Dr. Robert Herrick (HSPH) whose 2004 research publication first raised public attention and awareness to this issue.
