Triumvirate Environmental to Remediate PCBs from Umass Buildings

As originally posted on umass.edu:

Caulk containing polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) has been southwest 5found in various areas of the Southwest Concourse as construction crews worked on a concourse replacement project in the student residential area. Remediation steps to protect public health and safety are under way, and construction is continuing as part of a revised plan that isolates affected areas and protects workers and the public.

Donald Robinson, director of Environmental Health and Safety, said, “We are coordinating with the state Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to address the issue and create a permanent remediation plan. We have retained the services of Woodward and Curran, an environmental consulting firm, and Triumvirate Environmental, a full-service environmental firm, to assist in managing PCB testing and remediation planning. As a result, we expect to reopen Southwest, as planned, for the fall semester.”

Robinson said caulk containing PCBs was discovered in between patio blocks, along some retaining walls, between granite steps, on expansion joints of concrete curbs, expansion joints in the concourse tunnel and caulking where concrete meets buildings. The PCBs have migrated into some adjacent soils, concrete, asphalt and granite, which will be removed or cleaned.

When Southwest was constructed in 1966, PCBs were contained in a number of products, including use as an additive to improve the elasticity of caulking materials. The chemical compound was subsequently banned in 1976. Other university buildings were constructed when PCB use was common, and Robinson noted that the University has experience successfully managing remediation projects in the Lederle Graduate Research Center and the W.E.B. DuBois Library.

The Southwest Concourse replacement project is a comprehensive revitalization of the pedestrian core of the student residential complex that replaces multiple underground utilities. In the landscape portion of the project, water, topography and native plantings, emphasizing sustainability, are key elements designed to transform the site, reducing the presence of asphalt and concrete. Facilities Planning expects Southwest to reopen for the fall semester, although the landscaping overhaul may not be finished until next spring.

ILTA (Independent Liquid Terminal Association) represents 80 companies and partnerships that operate bulk liquid storage terminals in 41 countries. These facilities are located in ports and along rivers, canals and pipelines. They serve the vital economic purpose of transferring liquid products from one transportation mode to another. Products handled by our members include crude oil, petroleum products and a wide variety of chemicals, as well as ethanol, biodiesel, vegetable oils, molasses and fertilizers.

ILTA is composed solely of corporate members, unlike many other trade associations that have individual members. ILTA members fall into one of three categories. Two of those categories are for companies in the terminal business, including for hire and international terminals and many of our current customers (NuStar Energy, Citgo Petroleum, Colonial Pipeline, Hess, IMTT, Kinder Morgan, Liquid Transfer Terminals, Motiva Enterprises, Sunoco and Westway Terminals. The third category is Supplier Members. Triumvirate is listed as a supplier member along with many companies that we work in conjunction with (Allentech, Baker Corp and Matrix) and those that are customers (Groundwater Environmental Services and Conestoga Rovers). All of ILTA's member share the belief that a unified association is in their best interest. As an association, we enable our members to pool their resources, to more effectively monitor and help to shape government laws and regulations, and to foster educational, training, and networking opportunities for the entire industry.

From OneDayOneInternship.com: Posted by Willy Franzen on Wednesday, July 22, 2009

In the environmentalist's ideal world there would be no such thing as hazardous waste. Everything would be pure and natural and "green." Unfortunately, that will never happen (partially because every living thing is its own little hazardous waste factory). How we deal with this hazardous waste is what truly determines the future of our environment. Triumvirate Environmental has figured this out, and they've spent the last 21 years building a business that provides "turnkey environmental and hazardous waste management services to clients across four niche sectors; Education, Healthcare, Industrial, and Life Sciences." They're based in Somerville, MA with locations across New England, New York, and the Mid-Atlantic, and they also appear to be masters of social media.

Join the Triumvirate

I'm surprised that I hadn't heard of Triumvirate Environmental until today. They're totally on top of employment branding and social media use, so you'd think they'd be on my radar screen (I actually have an internship radar that gives me ideas for posts). This is impressive because they're doing a great job making hazardous waste management exciting for job/internship seekers and customers alike. Triumvirate Environmental has 9 blogs on topics that include The Environment, Environmental Careers, Higher Education, Healthcare, Industrial and Manufacturing, Life Sciences and BioPharma, Engineering Blogs, National and International Environmental News, and Social Media. It almost seems like too much, but if blog readers turn into customers, employees, or interns, then it's well worth it. Triumvirate is all over Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube as well.

Although I find Triumvirate's social media use impressive, I'm more impressed with their customer service philosophy, which is built off of their mission to "build the most productive, long-term, customer-intimate, environmental services firm by WOWing! each employee, and each customer, every day." It's all about WOWs! I've found that companies that treat their customers well, also treat their interns well, and the same can be said for companies that have Career blogs. That's why you should definitely check out Triumvirate's Career Center. Right now they have two unpaid Fall internships at their Somerville, MA office posted: Human Resources Intern and Marketing/Communications Intern. Additionally, Mark Campanale from Triumvirate recently tweeted that he's looking for Fall interns in SEO/Web Marketing. Triumvirate's interns are very active on the blogs, so you can even get an inside look at what it's like to intern at Triumvirate. You can apply for internships at Triumvirate online, but I'll bet that using social media to reach out to them may be a more effective way to get noticed.
