Turnkey EHS Program Development and Management Enables Biotech Company's Rapid Growth

The Challenge

Our client, a biotechnology company based in Cambridge, MA, is growing in leaps and bounds.
In a short period, they exponentially increased their number of full-time employees. Along with the substantial increase in people came a need for more facility space. The company quickly expanded their organization into multiple regions in North America. They relocated various labs and moved into a significantly larger new space, which involved moving chemicals and decommissioning their old facility.

The rapid growth is exciting, but with it the biotech company faced a significant challenge: They did not have an environmental, health, and safety (EHS) program in place. Knowing that they needed to develop a program and bring on knowledgeable EHS professionals to permanently join their staff, they were unsure where to start. So they started with Triumvirate Environmental – and we rose to the challenge.

Triumvirate Environmental's Solution

Because of their dramatic growth but lack of internal EHS personnel, the company needed Triumvirate to develop and manage their full EHS program, including hazardous waste management and disposal, facility moves, and employee training.

What was attractive to the company was our ability to provide a turnkey engagement. By bringing us in as a partner, they expected to receive a world-class EHS program that would keep their employees safe and their facilities compliant, and we exceeded their expectations.

At the outset, a key person from each of our service lines met with the client’s stakeholders and  toured their facilities. By taking this collaborative, team-based approach, we were able to understand their goals and needs from the beginning of the partnership. Everyone was on the same page, which is crucial for a successful program.

Consulting Expertise and Ongoing Onsite Support

For this engagement, we had both consultants and environmental specialists on site at their various facilities. Our team served as the company’s EHS department to manage each site’s EHS functions. We created the EHS program, implemented the plans, served as a liaison during regulatory inspections, and trained the hundreds of new employees who joined during the company’s rapid growth.

To support the company’s researchers and the groundbreaking work they were performing, our skilled team performed numerous functions, such as routine hazardous waste collections, SAA and MAA inspections, chemical inventories, and scheduling.

Project-Based Engineering Work

In addition to the EHS program management and onsite environmental support, we performed – and continue to perform – project-based work for this expanding biotech firm. For example, we swiftly conducted a thorough mold remediation that enabled the company to continue their innovative research without a gap in their work. We also decontaminated several biosafety cabinets, performed employee air monitoring, and redesigned their wastewater system.

When they relocated to their larger, updated facility, the company tapped us to safely, efficiently, and compliantly handle the move. We moved their chemicals to the new facility and fully decontaminated and decommissioned the old one.

The work for this company was a collaborative effort between our consultants, environmental specialists, engineers, and lab and facility services team. Our role, which we embraced, was to create and implement a top-notch EHS program while the company looked to hire and develop their own internal EHS department.

Long-Term Results

As a result of our partnership, this biotech company can continue its research uninterrupted while growing rapidly. As their partner, we kept their long-term goals at the forefront of our efforts; we were crucial to this fast-paced, growing company during a time when they did not have in-house resources.

Respectful of their hiring process, we wanted them to find people would be the right fit for their organization. We were happy with our role as the transitional team who set up their EHS program and helped them find their permanent EHS employees – ultimately setting up the company with a safe, compliant workplace.
