Cost Savings & Waste Minimization through Process Auditing & Tried Solutions

Situation

A company in the research and development phase of developing an experimental battery came to Triumvirate after months of doing business to ask for help reducing their waste cost.

Action

Triumvirate’s team was thorough and methodical in finding the best solution for the company. Here’s what they did.

  • The team gained intimate knowledge of the waste generation process through several site walk-throughs and by acquiring and reading all related documentation. In evaluating their management of hazardous waste, Triumvirate found the company was not only disposing of the constituents of their battery as hazardous waste, but also the vessel that carries the waste.
  • Triumvirate interviewed company representatives from different departments: EHS, engineering, operations, etc. asking questions about the waste type, chemicals involved, alternative processes and more.
  • Based on the answers and the discovery that the vessel carrying the waste was also being disposed of, team members contacted Triumvirate’s in-house experts to determine if there’s a market for the waste product, what the recycling options are, and whether there’s an opportunity to create a new recycling process that would render the chemicals salable.
  • The team then audited all potential processes and buyers with the company’s interests and reputation in mind.
  • The team developed top solutions and used Triumvirate’s connections at various state and federal departments to assure findings and solutions are completely compliant with all regulations (all the while never disclosing the identity of the client).
  • After determining that the top solutions were not only compliant, but also the most beneficial to the company, the team presented the solutions to the company selection committee.

Result

Triumvirate Environmental was able to find a solution that matched the clients needs and assure its compliance with all regulatory bodies. Throughout the process Triumvirate was able to keep the identity of the company anonymous and bridge the gaps between departments at the client’s site.

Triumvirate found that the vessel carrying the waste was made of steel and contributed 80% of the total waste volume. After evaluating regulatory guidance regarding the material and process, Triumvirate determined the steel could be recycled as scrap.
Triumvirate reduced the company's waste footprint by 80% and cut cost considerably.
