ACCOUNT GOVERNANCE FOR MULTI-SITE LIFE SCIENCES GIANT

The Problem

Inconsistent EHS support from a variety of different vendors pushed a Life Sciences mega-corporation to their breaking point. With sites across regions and of different sizes, pre-existing systems did not take a centralized approach to waste management—different sites utilized different vendors with varying levels of success. This led to difficulties collecting and working with waste and spend data, finding sustainable options for waste management, cost-effectiveness, and more.

This nationwide, enterprise Life Sciences organization was missing:

  • One centralized system for data management and reporting
  • Landfill diversion and sustainability initiatives
  • Cross-site integration connecting manufacturing sites with R&D standards and policies
  • Consistent, experienced support

They needed one partner to come in and set up an Integrated Waste Management Program (IWMP) for their sites, including 15 sites in multiple different states and regions. They needed consistency, accountability, safety, sustainability, and compliance.

Our Solution

Our Proposed Solution

This enterprise organization reached out to Triumvirate Environmental in an attempt to streamline and centralize their waste (and general EHS) processes. Our competitive pricing, industry reputation, and nationwide footprint impressed the client—as did our innovative “account governance” support model. This organization realized that in working with us, they could have everything they need with one partner:

  • Reporting help
  • KPI tracking
  • Regular business reviews
  • Increased recycling and sustainability
  • Technical expertise
  • Dedicated onsite personnel
  • And more

This was augmented by our staunch commitment to operational excellence initiatives—with only a few dedicated points of contact to oversee accounts across the nation, things didn’t get lost in the shuffle; our teams were able to help implement an IWMP for the whole organization. We also proved a dedication to continuous improvement—as an extension of the organization’s team, we were just as concerned with their success as they were.

Our Solution, In Action

The organization signed on to work with us as a partner for onsite support services, routine training and development, consulting, and other ad hoc projects. We came with an account governance model for enterprise waste management. The initial agreement and onboarding lasted only 90-120 days before we were up and running full time across the various sites. To approach the problem, we:

  1. Mapped the transition process, including considerations specific to each site’s needs. This included onsite visits, shadowing previous waste vendors, routine meetings and check-ins, and involvement from local, regional, and corporate leadership on both sides.

  2. Determined (and agreed upon) KPIs.

  3. Developed an easy-to-read scorecard for cross-functional tracking of KPIs.

  4. Created, with support from corporate leadership on both sides, an approved-TSDF list and ensured each facility operated within the bounds of this list.

  5. Co-developed a routine waste and spend report to best fit the organization’s needs.

  6. Co-developed a business review template for which results could be shared and discussed.

  7. Coordinated effort on an Operational Excellence initiative—what this would mean, how the initiatives would be tracked, and how reporting could best be leveraged.

Throughout the process, there were regular site-level and corporate-level meetings between Triumvirate and the Life Sciences organization to ensure mutual success and understanding. The organization was set up with one partner for operational excellence, a single provider for all sites, and a promise of continuous improvement.

The Results

As a result of this partnership, the organization gained better visibility into waste and spend data, allowing for benchmarking against other large life science companies for better informed decision making. They were also able to increase their recycling and overall sustainability efforts. All of this culminated in the organization seeing approximately $1.8M in annualized cost-savings identified amongst sites, with over $750K implemented.

In the future, the organization can expect continuous improvement aligned with cutting-edge technology. They are aligned with a partner that grows and invests in technologies and assets that will directly benefit them, such as:

  • Waste container bar code tracking and chemical inventory management
  • Third party environmental reporting
  • Expanded sustainable waste disposal options
  • Radioactive and high-hazardous materials disposal improvement and training

We continue to service this organization going on 4 years, and maintain 20-30 full time onsite support staff across the enterprise Life Sciences organization’s sites. We have been involved with the divesture and selling of certain sites as well as integration of new sites. Our account governance model is more than just account management—it's a holistic approach to EHS support and success—and has proven to result in operational excellence, compliance, sustainability, safety, and cost-savings.
