Air Permitting and Testing

Situation

The company called in its environmental health and safety partner, Triumvirate Environmental, to advise whether an alternative option was available.

Action

Triumvirate’s technical services group reviewed sampling methods approved by both the MADEP and the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to determine if an alternative method was available.  Through extensive research of similar-type facilities in the US, Triumvirate located several other companies in the United States that have similar types of control equipment.

This research included review of the EPA database on types of control technologies, Tile V Permitted facilities and Control Technologies. Through this research, Triumvirate determined that other studies had been completed for the EPA on this type equipment that was similar to our client’s. Triumvirate developed a report that detailed all of the information that was collected and stated the similarities between these and the client's equipment to establish a baseline for the cyclone efficiency rating which if not accepted would have required the stack testing.

Result

The initiative allowed for the re-allocation of resources within waste management program allowed for savings in money and resources. Due to the continued bulking of the materials, cost saving from this specific stream of waste was 66%, even when factoring in the cost of cubic yard boxes and pallets. This eventually led to storing less 30-gallon drums in Main Accumulation Areas, thus freeing up space to help accommodate compliance. This company, with the re-use of the drums, now saves nearly 7,800 pounds of plastic on an annual basis.  Researchers also supported this program due to constant decontamination of drums, clean poly bags, and guaranteed re-use of the same drum. All material is now sent to a Waste to Energy facility instead of incineration.
