Multi-Part Preventative Maintenance Planning and Implementation at a Large Hospital

Situation

The large hospital in MA brought in Triumvirate Environmental with the hopes that they would create streamlined, preventative maintenance program. Ultimately allowing the facility to stay organized and on top of required maintenance.

Action

Triumvirate immediately brought many new items of preventative maintenance servicing to the hospital. Actions that have been taken are as follows:

  • Main Accumulation Area, Secondary Containment Cleaning.  Secondary containment for hazardous waste is not only an essential part of pollution control;it is also required by law. By regulation they must be kept clean in order to properly inspect the integrity of the containment. By putting the cleaning of the secondary containment in the MAA  on a preventative maintenance schedule the organization can be ensured the containment will remain clean, intact, and capable of containing any uncontrolled release of a hazardous waste
  • Industrial Wastewater Pretreatment System Secondary Containment Cleaning
  • Wastewater Lift Station Cleaning: A wastewater lift station can easily be forgotten about and troublesome when it fills with unwanted debris. By allowing Triumvirate to clean the lift station, Triumvirate was able to assess the level of debris and recommend a cleaning schedule that will guarantee the lift station works as designed.
  • Chemical Feed Lines for the Wastewater System Replacement Another item that is frequently overlooked are the treatment chemical feed lines on a waste water system. These lines are usually carrying high concentration sulfuric acid and sodium hydroxide. When one of these lines fails, not only does it create a mess that is difficult to clean, it can seriously injury to anyone in the line of fire. By replacing these lines before they fail we were able to avoid any costly failures.
  • Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan Inspections As part of the hospital’s NEPDES permit to discharge storm water into a wetland, they are required to inspect the catch basin system. Triumvirate took control of these inspections and identified issues for correction including sedimentation control and hazardous substance relocation. Triumvirate was able to measure the depth of sediment in catch basins and remove the sediment before it caused a failure or flow problem.
  • Designation System Triumvirate implemented a system of unique designations for each basin. With the new designation system Triumvirate then mapped and labeled the basins. In the event of a spill of hazardous material this will make it easier and faster to identify which catch basins could be involved and where intervention is needed to divert the material away from unaffected basins.

Result

Triumvirate Environmental’s custom preventative maintenance plan has allowed the hospital to stay on top of maintenance. Efficiency and compliance has improved and the organization has saved thousands of dollars in potential fines.
